5 Stages to Selling Your Home: #2 Decluttering Your Home

You’re working towards or have already found the perfect realtor.  Now you need to think about showing off your home to potential buyers and that means decluttering your home!

Buyers want to see the potential your home may have for their needs.  By decluttering your home you’re allowing them to see the space more openly and giving them the ability to envision their own items in the home or how they may utilize a space.  If a room is full of furniture, boxes, countertops are messy or just overly crowded and cluttered it will seem smaller and the buyer may not see its full potential.

So how do you declutter?  You can always hire a professional organizer to come into your home.  Your realtor may even have someone that they work with.  If not, here are some tips for tackling it yourself!

  1. Clear away countertops, tops of dressers, desks and sinks.  Store items you need regularly in drawers, under sinks or in cupboards in easily accessible bins.  Other items not regularly needed can be put into storage for the duration of the sale.
  2. Remove unnecessary furniture from rooms.
  3. Clean up the front hallway by putting away shoes and jackets.
  4. Excess toys should be stored away separately.
  5. Put laundry and clothing away neatly.
  6. Ensure the yard is tidy.

Decluttering your home in preparation to sell can seem like a daunting task, but it can also help you get organized for moving out of your home as well!
